Back Ukrainian Short-Term Fellowships 2024

Ukrainian Short-Term Fellowships are specifically for active molecular life scientists who are resident in Ukraine at the point of application, or displaced from Ukraine as a result of war in the country. These Fellowships are for short-term visits to a host laboratory for a period of up to 4 months and have a fixed monetary value of €12,000 to use for travel to the host laboratory and living subsistence for the duration of the Fellowship.

Applications as well as the referees' letters of support must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will NOT be accepted.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Ukrainian Short-Term Fellowships are specifically for active molecular life scientists who are resident in Ukraine at the point of application, or displaced from Ukraine as a result of war in the country.
  • Applicants must have a PhD and at least one recent published paper (within the last 3 years) in an international scientific journal.
  • Ukrainian Short-Term-Fellowships are not awarded for attendance at courses, symposia, meetings or congresses.
  • In order to be eligible to apply for a Ukrainian Short-Term-Fellowship, applicants need to be members of the Ukrainian Biochemical Society or hosted by a scientist who is a member of a FEBS Constituent Society.
  • Applications must be within the scope of the science of biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • Applications may be made at any time within the 2024 year, but an application must be submitted at least three months before the proposed starting date.

  • Candidates must provide details for an experienced scientist who has agreed to submit a letter supporting the application through the website. The referee should be acquainted with your work and must not work at the host institute. Applicants having obtained their PhD recently are encouraged to ask their PhD supervisor to provide this letter. The letter of support must be received before the application can be submitted.

Fellowship Details

  • The purpose of Ukrainian Short-Term Fellowships is to specifically help Ukrainian molecular life scientists, given their current situation, to develop scientific collaborations with host researchers and organizations in FEBS countries (countries with a FEBS Constituent Society), with the hope of attracting further funding to extend their joint research stay, if required. The collaborations should be of mutual research interest to both Fellow and host and could involve developing joint research projects, undertaking advanced training or employing techniques not available at the usual place of work.
  • Ukrainian Short-Term Fellowships are awarded for up to 4 months.
  • Ukrainian Short-Term Fellowships are intended to cover subsistence and travel costs to the host lab for the Fellow only. The daily subsistence allowance is calculated at €100 per day and a non-negotiable fixed amount of €12,000 for a stay of up to 4 months, will be provided.
  • Applications must be completed in English.
  • The Fellowship should be taken up within six months of its award. Any delay will require the authorization of the Chairperson of the FEBS Fellowships Committee.
  • Within three months of completion of the Fellowship, Fellows must electronically send a short report detailing the work done while in receipt of the Fellowship to the Chairperson of the FEBS Fellowships Committee. The FEBS Fellowship should be acknowledged in any work published relating to the project funded and two reprints of each article should be sent electronically to the Chairperson of the Fellowships Committee.

Application Timetable

  • The application must be submitted at least three months before the proposed starting date.
  • FEBS aims to inform the candidates of its decision within one month after submission.
  • The Fellowship should be taken up within six months of its award.
